PNR stands for "Passenger Name Record".
This number is unique and is generated by "CRS" (Computer Reservation System) automatically.
This is used as an indexing number to the details of a passenger who booked his ticket but not yet confirmed or a group of passengers. These details are stored in the system database. In this database there are also details about that passenger's current reservation status which changes continuously after opening every then cancelled ticket.
This unique 10 digit number is generally found on the printed Indian Railway ticket's right top corner. If it is an e- ticket, it will be mentioned in a separate box on the top.

Once the booking process is finished to this point, the CRS system would give a unique record locator which is in "alpha-numeric" format. This will be the same even if there are further changes in the ticket details.
